The non-emergency positions will help with St John's patient transport service and require as little as four to eight hours a week commitment, with no weekends.

Volunteer member services manager Kate Fina said the new roles were also physically less demanding.

"The priority for these roles is to provide companionship and in-transit care to low-acuity patients, rather than the clinical know-how," she said.
