THE push for cuts to paper coffee cups has gathered steam at local cafes with more than a dozen of them offering discount fills for BYO containers.
The Responsible Cafes website, which promotes the reduction of disposable coffee cup waste, lists 13 local brewhouses from Duncraig to Alkimos boasting discounts between 20c and $1 for drinkers who provide reusable wares.
Quinns Shack General and Liquor Store in Quinns Rocks lays claim to the biggest reward for an environmental pour, spruiking a $1 cheapener on their Australian Will & Co brew.
Customers can BYO cup or buy one of the store’s branded ones.
The decision to join the Responsible Cafes initiative was an easy one to make for owner Rebecca Mason, who said the responsible service of takeaways coffees had been a regular discussion point.
“It’s crucial for us to continue to listen to our community,” she said.
“We invested in our own branded reusable take away coffee cups and encouraged the adoption of a decent discount to attract more people to jump onboard to a great initiative that has been driven by the locals of Quinns Rocks.”
Other cafes offer a percentage discount such as Distrykt Coffee (4 per cent) in Beldon and Blue Vue Cafe (10 per cent) in Quinns Rocks.
In March, the City of Wanneroo got behind the campaign, encouraging local cafes to sign up at responsiblecafes.org.
Mayor Tracey Roberts considered takeaway coffees “a good place to start” when it came to waste management.
