THE Mitchell Freeway extension opened to traffic this morning.
Early risers were able to travel along the 6km stretch of road between Hester Avenue and Burns Beach Road from 4am.
But it was not without incident, with reader Kye Carter reporting a crash on the Hester bridge about 6am this morning.
Main Roads’ website said the roundabout controlled interchanges were operating at Neerabup Road and Hester, and there was a new intersection at the connection of Wanneroo Road, Flynn Drive and Neerabup.
“This means road users will be able to exit the new freeway at Neerabup Road and continue east for direct access to Wanneroo Road and Flynn Drive or west for direct access to Connolly Drive,” it said.
“Hester Avenue (between Hidden Valley Retreat and Wanneroo Road) and Wanneroo Road (between Hall Road and Hester Avenue) also follow improved layouts, having been widened to two lanes in each direction.”
One motorist was eager to be the first to travel along the extension, camping out overnight and posting a video to social media of his inaugural drive on the road.
There are still some works to be completed, with Neerabup Road eastbound closed between Connolly Drive and the freeway and at the northbound entry point, as well as lane closures at the Hester Avenue and Wanneroo Road intersection.
The shared path is not yet open to the public.
