CHILDREN became their favourite literary characters last month as north coast schools celebrated Children's Book Week.

The Children's Book Council of Australia co-ordinated the week from August 22 to 28 to encourage reading.

St Andrews Catholic Primary School in Clarkson held a parade on August 24. Principal Fintan Archer said dressing up as favourite book characters was an opportunity to engage children in reading.

"It's also a perfect time to find out about new, exciting books," he said.

"Reading is the gateway to all learning.

"And if we can optimise interest in books at St Andrews, our students will gain even better results in all key areas."

Yanchep Beach Primary School held its second "Drop everything and read" program on August 21, where students and grown-ups dressed up as their favourite book and story characters.

The school also raised $5005 through Book Week for its library.
