MRC put on displays, entertainment and food, as well as tours of the landfill site, waste transfer station, recycling centre and tip shop on October 5.

‘It was great to see the community get behind this,’ chief executive Brian Callander said. ‘Many people just had no idea of the size and diversity of our operations and were keen to find out just what happens to their waste.’

Sustainability and waste education manager Geoff Atkinson said tours ran throughout the day, with the 33-seater bus full for every tour.

‘We had a City of Wanneroo rubbish truck there and people and children just loved getting up close, climbing through it and watching the arm extend and pick up bins,’ he said.

Mr Atkinson said they received plenty of positive feedback, with visitors saying their children had wanted to know where rubbish went and they enjoyed seeing how much work went on behind the scenes of roadside pick-ups.
