The two male and two female pups are the third litter born at the zoo in the past year as part of an Australasian breeding program for the Asian small-clawed otter.

Perth Zoo senior vet Simone Vitali dropped in on the otters to give them vaccinations and a routine health check.

‘The pups, born on March 23 to parents Asia and Tuan, have started to venture out of their nest box and will become increasingly visible to visitors in the coming weeks,’ Dr Vitali said. ‘They are looking very healthy and progressing well, weighing between 550 and 780 grams each.

‘The four male siblings have been helping with the swimming lessons for the pups and also carrying food into the nest box.’

Born last year, the older siblings were the first otters born at the zoo in 18 years.
