Nearby resident Susanne Sunny Strobel started the petition objecting to the closure of the public accessway after the City of Wanneroo invited public comments on a proposal to amalgamate the access way with an adjacent lot.
A closure is not in the public interest, she said.
It would mean the loss of the only direct pedestrian access between the commercial, medical, educational and community centre of Yanchep and the highly popular tourist area at (Yanchep) Lagoon.
Earlier this year, members of Two Rocks Yanchep Residents Association raised concerns when the path was removed so a house could be built there. After making inquiries on their behalf, Wanneroo councillor Linda Aitken said the path ran through private property and the adjacent public accessway was still bush.
Association members decided to write to the City asking it to remove the bush and install a path.
Ms Strobel said she would collect signatures for the petition in central Yanchep on Sunday and planned to present it to the council next Tuesday.
The public comment period on the proposed closure will close on August 20.
