Planners Urge Refusal for Butler Bottle Shop

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

The plans by Coles Group Property to build a bottle shop next to its supermarket on Butler Boulevard will go to the council for a second time since the applicant appealed against the initial refusal to the State Administrative Tribunal.

At last Tuesday’s council briefing, the City’s acting planning director Pas Bracone said staff were recommending the council reaffirm its December decision.

“We don’t consider that the amended plans have been modified to the extent that satisfies main street principles,” he said.

Mr Bracone said at SAT mediation, staff suggested options would not have a negative effct on the main street retailers, but it was up to Coles to redesign its plans.

He said if the council reaffirmed refusal, a full SAT hearing was scheduled for July 1 to 3.

Following initial mediation, Coles submitted revised plans the council again refused in March.

Councillors had voiced concerns the location would hinder pedestrians in the main street, thus having a negative impact on other businesses along Butler Boulevard.
