Planning for the future

Wanneroo City Council agreed this month to continue leasing the current surf club building until the end of 2016 to the 32-year-old club for $1 a year.

A council report said the club had leased the current site off Brazier Road since 1987 and the previous lease expired on December 31, 2013.

It said the City planned to relocate the surf club to a more centralised location overlooking the beach as part of the Yanchep Lagoon redevelopment project.

‘A major focal point of the lagoon redevelopment will be the construction of a new surf club building,’ the report said. ‘The YSLSC will continue to lease the existing facility until the new building is available. Upon completion and handover of the new building, the existing leased building will be demolished within 60 days of the expiration/termination of the lease.’

Late last year, the council also considered a report on the redevelopment, which said the WA Planning Commission requested a coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plan that could delay the project by between six and nine months.

‘The proposed new lease’s three-year term will provide sufficient tenure to allow for the construction of the proposed new building, including any overrun in construction time,’ the February 4 report said.
