Plaques for rip victims

Grandfather Omri Peter Swan (57) had been body boarding at the beach on January 20, 2013, when he was caught in the beach’s permanent rip.

Bystanders helped pull Peter to shore and up onto the rocks, where others, including his family tried in vain to revive him.

His death, and that of Clarkson teenager Jenon Biwot (13) at the same beach less than two months later, sparked a review of coastal safety in the City of Wanneroo by Surf Life Saving WA.

The City has since installed beach safety signs at many of its beaches, and last week installed memorial plaques for both Peter and Jenon at the Alexandria Drive carpark overlooking Clayton’s Beach.

Mindarie resident Helen Randall, who campaigned for all the signs, said she hoped the greater awareness of the rip would help save lives.
