ORGANISERS have cancelled a popular Christmas carols event in Clarkson this year after failing to secure funding.

Last week Whitford Church announced on Facebook that the Somerly Carols, planned for December 7 at Riverlinks Park, would not take place.

Pastor Dean Groetzinger said the decision was made because the event would not receive Lotterywest funding this year, but would be reassessed next year.

‘They have been a great supporter and a great sponsor over the last few years,’ he said.

Mr Groetzinger said the event had grown over the past decade, with about 6000 people attending last year.

Although the City of Wanneroo last year decided to provide the event with $4000 of financial and in-kind support per year for five years, Mr Groetzinger said it was not feasible to hold a scaled-down event.

‘It could end up not being a great experience for anyone,’ he said.

The church will still hold its other carols in Heathridge on December 14.

On December 12, the Salvation Army and Merriwa Primary School will hold carols at Addison Park and Quinns Beach Primary P&C will hold carols too.

The Yanchep Two Rocks Community and Recreation Association will hold its annual carols at Charnwood Reserve on December 6.
