Push for new footy club

The budding Brighton AFL Club has applied to the WA Football Commission to join the 2014 Metro Football League, in which senior teams play on Sundays at 2pm.

Club general manager Doug Thorncroft said while there was already a club playing on Saturdays, the Quinns Districts Amateur Football Club, the region needed another club that held Sunday matches.

‘Senior Sunday footy is alive and well in the Perth metro area but there is nothing up this way,’ he said.

‘We’ve got a lot of guys who want to play Sunday footy.’

Mr Thorncroft said they were in discussions with the City of Wanneroo about where the club would be based because the closest football clubs were in Heathridge and Yanchep, with a gap of about 30km between them.

‘People don’t want to travel that far for training,’ he said.

Mr Thorncroft said residents who wanted to get involved as trainers, players, committee members or general members, could attend a community meeting next Tuesday.

‘We are targeting guys from 16 to 55,’ he said.

‘The other thing we want to focus on is community spirit for families ” getting wives and girlfriends and kids coming along.’

The meeting at the Butler Community Centre will start at 7pm on September 17. For more information, call 0477 816 714 or email generalmanager@ brightonaflclub.com.
