CONSTRUCTION of a community centre on the Quinns Mindarie Surf Life Saving Club should start in September following a $3.06 million tender decision.
The City of Wanneroo council accepted the tender offer from Broad Construction Services WA at its August 16 meeting.
According to the council report, construction is due to start on September 5 and finish by late July 2017.
The project will see an upper level community centre built on the existing surf life saving building on Quinns Road, and the report said the contractor would minimise disruption to their activities.
“The contractor’s onsite presence will be restricted to the southern side of the existing building, on the old caravan park site,” it said.
“(This will) ensure that there is minimal impact upon patron carparking and access requirements for general use of the beach and the adjoining changerooms and Portofinos.
“As part of the work involves the demolition of the surf club’s existing storage shed, the equipment housed within this structure will be transferred to two temporary story containers.”
In March 2015, the City had proposed to build the Quinns Mindarie Community Centre within four years, and that April, residents lodged a petition asking it to “honour the promise” to build the community centre using funds from the sale of Fowey Loop land.
A 2010 needs and feasibility study consulted community groups that might use the centre, including QMSLSC, Quinns Rocks and Mindarie playgroups, Quinns FC soccer club, Quinns Rocks Fishing Club, Women’s Health Works and Joondalup Youth Support Services.
The City received a $700,000 Lotterywest grant for the project last December.
