STUDENTS created curious creatures like ‘octo-socks’ during National Recycling Week this month.
Quinns Rocks Primary School took part in Planet Ark’s November initiative, which aims to highlight fun recycling activities, lessons and events.
Teacher David Fernandez said the school supported the 5Rs – recycle, reuse, renew, relearn and reward – as part of the curriculum.
Mr Fernandez said they held a school-wide pledge in a plastic bottle, and had a plastic bag competition where children created something from shopping bags.
Individual classes, including the Year 3 and Pre-primary students pictured, learnt to make recycled octo-socks and fly traps from plastic bottles.
Students also made recycled street signs for the ‘Living laboratory; and did planting in the vertical garden.
The school has also created an online shop, Enterprising Kidz, to sell student-crafted items that have been collected for recycling, including key rings, Christmas decorations and candles.
