Quinns Rocks shark barrier leads to closures

Laura PondNorth Coast Times

THERE will be temporary closures along Quinns Beach when construction of a 300m shark barrier starts next week.

Work on Global Marine Enclosures’ $420,000 eco-friendly barrier is due to start on Monday.

The southern end of the barrier will be installed 10 metres from the concrete beach access ramp and extend 300m to the north and 85m offshore.

Adjacent areas will be closed temporarily, with signage and fencing in place to redirect pedestrians.

A helicopter will be used to install barrier anchor blocks on the mornings of January 17 and 18 and the enclosure is expected to be completed by January 31.

The City of Wanneroo said it expected increased numbers of visitors to the beach after the barrier’s opening so would be creating a temporary overflow car park on vacant land south of Quinns Mindarie Surf Life Saving Club, subject to approval from the WA Planning Commission. It will assess permanent additional parking requirements soon.
