Local residents joined in a ‘pimp the bike rack’ activity at Yanchep Community Centre last Thursday by cutting, braiding and embellishing T-shirt strips then wrapping them around the racks.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the event was developed through the City’s placemaking consultation process.

‘Placemaking helps us work with residents to create a common vision for their community and run activities that they want to be involved in,’ she said.

‘This is a great event which will leave a unique piece of artwork for the whole community to appreciate.’

Mrs Roberts said Yanchep artist Angie Beck was an instrumental part of the project and October 9 workshop.

‘Ms Beck was recently awarded with a City of Wanneroo volunteer excellence award and her continued commitment to the community illustrates that she is a very worthy recipient,’ Mrs Roberts said.

Organisers decided to target the bike racks because they sat among shrubbery and hoped the splash of colour would help them stand out and increase their use.
