Commander David Haynes said the group had about 50 volunteers to cover its seven-day service, which runs from 7am to 5pm during winter.

‘They cover a range of roles,’ he said. ‘Some are radio, some do radio and boats, some just do boats. We have people in their 80s who solely do radio.’

Mr Haynes said there were skippers and crew on call 24 hours a day, in case police called on them to search if there was a flare sighting.

The group provides radio coverage seven days a week to vessels in local waters and responds to calls for assistance.

It provides training, including for first aid, to volunteers and needs more people to help keep the water safe. Call 0488 615 777 or visit the office near the boat ramp at Two Rocks Marina.
