He raised more than $500 through gold coin donations when his mother Katherine and teacher Kimberley Wildish poured icy cold water over him on August 29.

In the school newsletter, principal Elizabeth Wildish said David issued the challenge to himself and teachers because he had first-hand experience of the debilitating motor neurone disease after his grandfather was diagnosed with it last year.

‘David explained to his classmates and myself that his grandfather deteriorated very rapidly, eventually being unable to care for himself and losing his speech before passing away just before Christmas last year,’ she said.

‘David wishes to raise awareness of the disease as well as funds to support the research into the disease and has asked that he can perform the challenge here at school.’
