Mr Steffens, who served on Wanneroo City Council from 1999 to last October, received the Joe North Award in the 2014 Local Government Road Safety Awards on March 6.

He was involved in the City’s RoadWise committee and volunteered for the Driver Reviver service that provided free coffees and teas to drivers on Indian Ocean Drive on long weekends.

The City of Wanneroo also won the safe speeds category for its review of default state speed limits within its boundaries.

WALGA president Troy Pickard said road safety was important to the community and local governments had a key role in applying the safe system approach to ensure the Towards Zero strategy was effectively implemented.
