NEARLY 250 runners gathered in Quinns Rocks on January 7 for the launch of Perth’s newest parkrun event.

Event director Shirley Treasure said it was a “phenomenal” turnout, with 57 people first- time attendees of the international initiative.

“Getting that many people out and active in our community is absolutely brilliant,” she said.

The Quinns Rocks resident instigated the event in the area, with the City of Wanneroo providing $5000 to get it started and $5000 matched from national sponsors.

It now relies on volunteers to continue, with each runner asked to help out at least three times per year.

Mrs Treasure said the free 5km timed runs, held at 8am every Saturday morning, were suitable for adults and children of all abilities.

“It’s a run, not a race,” she said.

“I’m just passionate about people being healthy in our local community.”

She described Quinns Beach foreshore as the ideal location for the activity.

“The view of the ocean from the whole course is absolutely breathtaking,” she said.
