School numbers boost causes council concern

A proposal before tonight’s council meeting seeks to increase the college’s Merriwa campus population from 290 to 410 to accommodate years 11 and 12 students until its Alkimos campus opens in February 2017.

At last week’s council briefing, councillor Linda Aitken asked administration if the proposal included new toilet facilities to accommodate more students.

City planning implementation manager Pas Bracone said it was not in the application, but there would be requirements for upgrades to existing facilities.

Cr Dianne Guise questioned the steps taken to accommodate 410 students.

‘I’m concerned about the increase in terms of how they will be housed,’ she said.

Mr Bracone said the school had approval for transportable buildings and the buildings would remain at the school even after the new campus was finished. The applicant has also proposed an extra 46 car bays.
