Social media blamed for out-of-control party

Staff ReporterNorth Coast Times

Police received a report of a large group of young people trying to gatecrash a party on Anchorage Drive about 9.20pm on Saturday May 4, which Clarkson Senior Sergeant Mal Jones said was posted online.

‘This is a classic example of parents being oblivious to social media and the effects it can have,’ he said.

‘It was supposed to be a gathering of friends (but) made into an open party on social media and the hordes just descended, about 300.’

Sgt Jones said the incident tied up 20 police vehicle units and the police helicopter and there were several reports of damage across Mindarie and surrounding suburbs that night, associated with the party.

Damage included graffiti on windows and a police vehicle, which offenders tagged with a black marker, and a burglary at a nearby shed from where thieves stole alcohol from a fridge.

Sgt Jones said one juvenile was charged with drug possession and four were taken into custody for their own safety and returned to their parents.
