Sunny outlook for Neerabup solar proposal

Laura PondNorth Coast Times

A SOLAR farm in Neerabup is a step closer, with the City of Wanneroo set to invite tenders for its construction.

Councillors unanimously supported the City’s recommendation to hold an open tender process for the lease of land at Lot 600 Wattle Avenue for construction of the farm and supply of green power to suitable City-owned facilities.

It comes after it sought expressions of interest for construction and management of the facility in 2015, with eight submissions received.

An independent consultant assessed the submissions and recommended the City change its scope to seek a reduced-scale facility and make itself the foundation customer.

The decision at the July 19 meeting means none of the received offers will be accepted and it will instead publicly advertise applications for the amended proposal.

Cr Dianne Guise said it was exciting and could be “the start of great things to come”.

Also speaking in favour of the recommendation, Cr Domenic Zappa said the facility would help the environment and reduce costs for consumers.

“The sun is shining brightly on us in the City of Wanneroo – I’m looking forward to seeing it coming to fruition,” he said.

“The use of solar is a step in the right direction.”

Cr Linda Aitken declared a financial interest in the item and was not present during voting.
