Teacher Atanas Dimitrov said as regional champions, the team of 19 Somerly Primary School students took part in the August 30 finals in South Perth.
‘After six round robin games, virtually nothing separating the top three teams, as each had lost a game,’ Mr Dimitrov said, praising the players’ defence and attack skills.
‘We had headed off two previous tournament winners to top our group.
‘The semi-final against another previous tournament winner, South Halls Head, beckoned us.’
Mr Dimitrov said they won the semi-final, with players Kai Matcham and Eli Johnstone standing out on the field, and went on to play their first ever state final against Waikiki.
‘The pressure is evident on the faces of our team (and) injuries to key players are weighing heavily on our minds,’ he said.
‘But this was a new game and the tide had turned ” we missed too many tags and this game just seemed one game too far.’The final score was 8-4, in Waikiki’s favour and Somerly took the runner-up post.
