The district’s crime prevention and diversity unit OIC Sergeant Rocky Scully said officers and Neighbourhood Watch representatives had been running awareness campaigns at local shopping centres.

Sgt Scully said people should secure their handbags, purses and wallets while shopping during the festive season.

To report a stolen bag, purse or suspicious behaviour, call police on 131 444.

Police suggest these tips:

– Never leave your handbag or purse in your trolley while shopping.

– Keep minimal amounts of cash in your wallet or purse.

– In cafes and restaurants, don’t hang your bags on the back of chairs. Keep them on your shoulder or lap, or between your feet on the ground.

– Thieves working in pairs may attempt to divert your attention.

– Be wary of using hooks on the back of toilet doors, as thieves reach over and attempt to steal bags.
