Too-tall light poles pulled from park

A crane removed the last two light poles and laid them on a transport truck early last week.

Controversy over the poles arose in mid-2011 when three mobile telecommunication providers proposed to install antennas on them, which nearby residents, childcare centres and businesses opposed.

The City of Wanneroo subsequently found the dimensions of the three poles exceeded the approved plans, with other light poles on the site much shorter.

The matter was taken to the State Administrative Tribunal, which led to a confidential council decision last October that they had to be reduced in height to 11.8m within 30 days.

Workers installed the shorter replacement poles on Thursday, May 16, and installed antennas on one later the same day.
