Vandals force Quinns Rocks water tower removal

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

MAINTENANCE costs resulting from illegal access and vandalism prompted the dismantling and removal of a water tower in Quinns Rocks this month.

Water Corporation Perth region manager Chris Smith said the old Hickory Drive high-level tank, built in the late 1960s or early 1970s, had serviced the area prior to a reservoir being built in Neerabup in about 1996.

Mr Smith said head pressure from Neerabup was not high enough to serve the area, but the Quinns Rocks tank was also no longer big enough to store water following population growth.

He said the Water Corporation had replaced the tank with a small booster station and listed it on the asset disposal register, but members of the public had been accessing the disused structure.

“The cost of maintaining the site due to illegal access and vandalism has steadily increased over the last couple of years,” he said.

“Local youths would also access the site and climb the tank structure.”

Crane operators helped dismantle the tower on March 18, and Mr Smith said there were no plans to sell the land.
