Vietnam vet to speak at ceremony for fallen comrade

A VIETNAM veteran from Queensland will speak at a dedication service for the dying soldier he held during a night patrol in 1969.

Private Allan English will be the guest speaker at this Sunday’s Vietnam Veterans Day Service in Clarkson, hosted by the Quinns Rocks Returned Services League sub-branch.

The August 18 commemorative service at Anthony Waring Reserve will include a dedication to the park’s namesake, Private Anthony Waring.

Quinns Rocks RSL secretary Arthur Ventham said Pte English was wounded at the same time as Pte Waring, who died after being hit by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade on June 16, 1969, during an Operation Esso night patrol near Dat Do, Phuoc Tuy Province in Vietnam.

Pte Waring was an apprentice electrical installer when he was drafted into the Royal Australian Regiment’s 5th Battalion in 1968.

The reserve is beside Aldersea Circle and links to Richard Aldersea Park, which were both named after another local soldier killed in action, Pte Richard Aldersea who died in Long Tan in 1966.
