AN outboard engine, fishing gear and plenty of plastic were hauled in during a beach clean-up in Alkimos recently.

More than 50 residents and community members volunteered in the April 27 clean-up at Alkimos Beach, where they learnt about the Marine Debris Initiative from environmental group Tangaroa Blue.

Residents and community groups volunteered to clean-up the beach.

They collected about 70kg of marine debris during the event, which was a collaboration between Lendlease, Tangaroa Blue Foundation, Alkimos Surf Lifesaving Club, Alkimos Scout Group and Alkimos Progress Association.

Discarded items they collected included an outboard engine, a large crayfishing pot, 50m of rope and other assorted fishing related items, as well as the usual pieces of hard plastic and plastic straws and bottles.

The event ended with a community barbecue and free coffees.
