Wanneroo Council endorses Splendid Park for Yanchep skate park

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

YANCHEP’s playing fields could become home to a skate park in 2020, following Wanneroo Council’s endorsement of the site.

Councillors unanimously endorsed a site on the western side of Splendid Park, formerly known as Yanchep active open space, as the preferred location at the November 13 council meeting.

After debate about appropriate wording, Cr Linda Aitken successfully moved an amendment to consider including CCTV as part of the design to protect that City’s assets.

A council report said the State Government had promised $450,000 for the project, but the City would need an extra $210,000, which it could source through external grant funds.

It said it could take about 75 weeks to build the park, and the project would require further negotiation with Yanchep Beach Joint Venture.

Councillors asked about the cost of including CCTV, and community and place director Debbie Terelinck said the design would come back to the council for consideration and staff would have a better idea of the cost then.

“At the moment it could be considered to be a little isolated because the development around it has not occurred as yet,” she said.

“We can investigate the installation of CCTV.”

The report said the skate park would need a 1000sq m site, and other locations considered included Oldham Park, Fisherman’s Hollow and Morwell Park beside Yanchep Secondary College.
