Water Corporation warns about bogus doorknockers in Yanchep

Staff WriterNorth Coast Times

THE Water Corporation is warning people to watch out for bogus doorknockers after receiving reports from customers of someone claiming to test the water in their area.

A report of a male caller at a Yanchep property about 7pm last night prompted the warning today, with advice that people should always ask for identification.

Spokeswoman Clare Lugar said the utility’s employees did not need to enter a house to check water quality.

“Never let anyone inside your home until you have asked to see an identification card – our employees will always carry one,” she said.

“If in any doubt, ask them for their name and call us on 13 13 75 to confirm they are from the Water Corporation.

“Be cautious and if you are still unsure do not open the door.

“You must feel absolutely comfortable with anyone you allow into your home.”

The utility warned that bogus callers may work in pairs, be reluctant to handover identification badges for closer examination, not wear an official uniform or have an official vehicle, and make residents feel under pressure.

It advised people to call WA Police immediately on 131 444 to report suspicious activity or call 000 in a life threatening emergency.
