AN abalone fisher needed first-aid after a wave knocked him onto the reef during the third abalone fishing session at Yanchep on Sunday.
Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club vice-president Sharon Taylor said despite the calm tide and low swell, only about 100 people turned out for the one-hour session ” almost half from last month.
‘There was no real reason we could see for the low number of abalone fishers,’ Ms Taylor said.
‘We’re not sure if it was because of the development of (Brazier) road with people not wanting to park further away and walk down or being the Christmas-New Year season many people may have gone away.’
There were no rescues but lifesavers gave 15 preventative warnings to fishers to stop them going out onto the reef.
City of Wanneroo rangers, Department of Fisheries compliance officers attended the session with Two Rocks Marine Rescue Group patrols.
