Yanchep: Little Mermaid Theatre lovin’ it at new rehearsal space

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

A FAST food outlet is an unusual setting for a nativity play, but that is where Little Mermaid Theatre has been rehearsing this year.

Theatre group founder Ted Dowling said the MacDonald’s restaurant in Yanchep had allowed him to use the space for weekly rehearsals and it was an appealing space for young actors to meet.

“We are rehearsing a very young and excited cast for the traditional worldwide reminder of the nativity,” he said.

They will stage the nativity play at the Yanchep Two Rocks Community Recreation Association’s annual Carols in the Park event in Two Rocks on December 9.

Mr Dowling said the theatre group would celebrate its 20th anniversary next year and more than 300 members had appeared in musical theatre productions over the past two decades.

“We were nomadic for many years, performing wherever until we opened the Little Mermaid Theatre in the Two Rocks Shopping Centre,” he said.

“In December 2015 The City of Wanneroo rewarded our endeavours with new theatre venue, which we christened with the major musical production Oliver and the first all-adult play What the Dickens.”

Mr Dowling said they planned to stage a reunion for the anniversary next Easter, called ‘Flash Back Carnivale’ and they had applied for State Government funding to do a musical theatre project for Youth Week next October.

The City of Wanneroo has given the recreation association $3000 for the Christmas event.
