YANCHEP pensioners were shocked to receive the grand prize in Cancer Council WA’s Grand Getaway Lottery recently.

Lyn and Neil McLennan were drawn as the winners of $160,000 cash in the fundraising lottery.

“I can’t believe it, I’m still in shock,” Mrs McLennan said.

“I’m 78 and I’ve never won anything wonderful in my life before – we’ve never been wealthy or been big spenders.

“We’re old pensioners battling along and this will just make such a difference and help us live independently longer.”

A family history of cancer inspired the couple to buy the ticket for the lottery, proceeds of which go towards cancer research, education and support programs.

“We always support Cancer Council as cancer has touched our family and I know it goes to a really good cause,” Mrs McLennan said.

“My mother died of bowel cancer and I nursed her at home and that was just really awful – there must be more we can do.”

The couple planned to spend the money on a new car and getting their windows cleaned rather than doing it themselves.

Tickets in Cancer Council WA’s latest Grand Getaway Lottery are now on sale, with up to 10,000 available at $50 each.

The grand prize winner will choose between two Audi vehicles valued at $154,000 or $150,000 cash.

There are also two holidays to Japan and Canada up for grabs in the early bird and bonus prize draws.
