Care with lawns

SEAN GRAY, horticultural consultant, The Garden WhisperersNorth Coast Times

I just want to correct the view I was reported as having – that lawns should be avoided because they consume plenty of water and increase temperatures around homes in summer.

This is not something I agree with, nor is it entirely true.

What I said in reference to lawns was that when it comes to verges, we should avoid using lawn. We need to look to using natural native verge plantings that use little or no water.

We need to look to lawn alternatives that use less water.

We should also avoid hard surfaces and synthetic lawn options because they contribute to increasing the thermal mass around the home, which makes our homes hotter in summer.

Beautiful lawns will always cool the area around homes. Where they are used, they should be minimised in area (40-60m2 is sufficient) so we better control our water use.
