Very few families have not been touched by the suicide of a relative or friend.
In Australia, one person dies by suicide every four hours. Each day we lose six people and for each person who dies there are at least 10 relatives and friends who will grieve deeply for their loss.
Each individual is dealing with his or her own complex and different issues, which can lead to a loss of self-esteem and self-love.
Likewise, the families who are dealing with the death of a loved one to suicide are very different in many ways but share a similar devastation. Those bereaved by suicide are at a high risk of suicide themselves.
The non-denominational organisation, The Compassionate Friends, provides a range of free support services to those who are struggling to deal with the grief of a suicide bereavement and can be contacted on 9535 7761 or a/h 9582 8113.
