Hail State Emergency Service Volunteers

I CONSIDER it is astounding how volunteers are so willing to risk their lives to save others experiencing the most difficult situations, such as in firestorms, flooding, cyclones and typhoons.

Volunteers may be selected for suitability, need to engage in regular training and may have out-of-pocket costs for travel, protective clothing and receive no income payments for their efforts.

In addition, there can be some issues with any injury compensation cover.

I suggest that the State Government needs to reward Department of Fire and Emergency Services volunteers with retail discount cards and or provide volunteers with annual ex gratia payments prior to Christmas each year.

It has been said before, that no greater love can be expressed than to give your life for others.

GRAHAM McPHERSON,

Mandurah.
