Though the working group on the extension to Hester Avenue is starting; it comes in the context of the State Government delaying the road project by another year.
Our report prompted the City of Wanneroo to release its response to our invitation for a comment on the State budget in a statement titled ‘Freeway extension stuck in the slow lane’.
‘I’m outraged the State Government has backed out of a commitment to complete the Mitchell Freeway extension to Hester Avenue within a reasonable timeframe,’ Mayor Tracey Roberts said.
‘We are the fastest growing local authority in Western Australia and this plan is fundamentally flawed with currently only one train station and no freeway on our boundaries.’
She is not the first mayor to bemoan the ‘lack of commitment to northern infrastructure projects’.
If enough people adopt her angry stance, the Government has another problem to add to its post-budget woes, including the fallout from forecast cuts in education.
