Residents should secure homes, businesses, cars

Motorcycles and scooters have become a popular form of transport by our younger generation and thieves.

More than 60 per cent of motor vehicle thefts relate to scooters. Crime results from criminals seeing opportunities and taking them so the public are to be urged to buy some type of locking device from any motorcycle or hardware shop.

Do not forget to secure your motorcycles including scooters in a garage or rear yard of you premises. It only take a few seconds for a thief to jump into a car or mobilise a motorcycle. When you leave your car, remove the ignition key and lock the doors.

Even when filling up with petrol or popping into the shop. Your vehicle is like a shop window: if you can see any property left inside, then so can the thief.

Take it with you or put it out of sight. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to smash a window.

Public apathy does not just relate to motor vehicle theft or property which has been left in motor vehicles, so call police when you see suspicious activity on 131 444.
