A SEEMINGLY natural talent for cross country running has Abigail Graham competing for national glory next month.

The 12-year-old Quinns Rocks Little Athletics Club member only took up the sport two years ago but is already a state champion for her age group, while also claiming seventh place against runners four years her senior in the U16 3000m at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships last year.

In August, Abigail will travel to Canberra for the Australian Cross Country Championships. She became hooked on the sport when her school, Quinns Baptist College, began a morning running club.

She now runs 50-60km a week in training.

“In the beginning it was tough, I was so unfit. But the more I ran, the easier it became and the more I enjoyed it,” she said.

“My goals are to make the Australian Youth Team and then the Olympics.”

Her impressive performances have drawn the eye of WA’s Talent ID Squad officials, who put athletes on a high performance pathway towards the Australian Institute of Sport.
