Downie travelled to Montreal last year to compete in the 2013 IPC World Championships where she won a bronze medal in the women’s 100m backstroke and silver in the 200m individual medley.

Her performances at the Australian Swimming Championships in Brisbane in April earned her selection on the Aus- tralian team for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Arena Swim Club’s Yolane Kukla was also recognised at the SwimmingWA awards night, being named age swimmer of the year.

In the past 12 months, Kukla broke a state record in the 17-18 year girl’s 100m freestyle and won three gold medals at the 2014 Australian Age Championships, earning a place on the Australia A team.
