Fun day for club sailors

Sun City Yacht Club members had the Ray Knapp Trophy in their sights for the first time last month.

Commodore John Utley said the February 15 event included a 16.3-nautical mile course with two marks and a sprint back to the start and finish line near Two Rocks Marina.

‘We had four keelboats in the race and first home was Lonely Spirit, skippered by John Clarke, in a time of three hours and 25 minutes, followed in by Jane Louise, skippered by Peter Todd,’ he said.

‘We started off in a light easterly and came home with a steady 20-knot southerly.

‘Six other club members joined the boats as crew and it was a fun day and, it turns out, the first keelboat race run by the club for 10 years.’

Mr Utley said that the former club commodore, the late Ray Knapp, had provided the trophy, having organised the club’s regular keelboat and dinghy races in the past.

‘He put the trophy up for a race to the north of Two Rocks and this is the first time that it has been competed for ” but won’t be the last,’ Mr Utley said.
