THE Lancelin Ocean Classic, one of the world’s longest-running windsurfing events, has a three-year sponsorship agreement with the State Government.
From next year, the event will receive funding from Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by the Royalties for Regions program.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the race was a home-grown event that attracted competitors from across the globe and had helped cement the town’s reputation as a windsurfing destination.
“The Lancelin Ocean Classic started in 1986 when a small group of windsurfers held a 25km race from Ledge Point to Lancelin,” he said.
“Thirty years on, professional and amateur competitors travel from around the world to take part.”The 2016 Lancelin Ocean Classic will run from January 14 to 17.
