Northern Beaches Cycling Club members compete across WA

NATHAN Venter (14) travelled to the Kwinana Motorplex to represent Northern Beaches Cycling Club at the Peel Junior Tour.

The tour featured a prologue, individual time trial and road race over one gruelling day.

Despite having largely trained in a carpark and open road under supervision, Venter has proved to be dedicated to training despite poor training conditions.

He was 10th overall in an elite under- 15 field.

West Coast Masters racing was held in the club’s home territory at Neerabup.

NBCC was again able to field riders in every grade from A to E.

Tony Clews, Riana Rose and Rebecca Schultz were a welcome return from long stints on the sidelines due to illness and injury.

E grade proved the most tactical of races, with Clews involved in repeated attacks supported by Edward Rose.

Clews (second) and Rose (third) were the best placed of NBCC riders in the E grade race.

An initially hesitant Wilna Kemp rode an impressive fifth in her first race and appears to be an enthusiastic convert to masters racing.

Mountain bike racing was held at Kambarang Bunbury for the State XCO (Olympic cross country format).

Richard Reeves opted for a fast start and settling in on second wheel before briefly dropping his chain.

He recovered to claim third place in D grade while Mark Papadopoff finished seventh in C grade.

A feature of the event was a dedicated 2km circuit built specifically to cater for hand cycle athletes. That race was won by local resident Conor McGrory.

NBCC hosted a Giro d’Italia-themed social evening at the Quinns Rocks Sports Club on Friday.

Club members competed on stationary ‘smart’ trainers on virtual hill climbs as spectators cheered them on during the live telecast of the Giro d’Italia.

A novel and social way of training, there are already plans to repeat the active social evening during the Tour de France.
