THE Marina, Mindarie will host its first open water swimming event on Sunday, March 24.

The Marina Swim will bring to a close the summer swimming season and there will be three distances for swimmers of varying experience levels to chose from.

Designed as an endurance swimming event, the 2.5km ‘club to pub’ will see swimmers starting at the Quinns Mindarie Surf Life Saving Club.

The 1.25km ‘classic’ will suit recreational swimmers with the course based entirely within the confines of the marina.

At 500m, the ‘splash and dash’ is ideal for junior and novice participants wanting to experience open water swimming, without having to contend with the ocean’s elements.

Athlete and event ambassador an open water swim, Aaron Ellis-Kerr, finished the Open Water Series season in third place in his category overall after coming second in the final round in Scarborough.

The Iluka resident recently completed the Rottnest Channel Swim and was looking forward to having an event closer to home.

“As a local and avid supporter of open water swimming, I think it’s a fantastic new initiative for this region,” he said.

The Marina has partnered up with swimwear label Catfish Designs, swimming goggle supplier Fiski and environmental organisations One Straw Co and Cleanamarina to help with water quality and overall marine environment preservation leading up to the event and on an ongoing basis.
