Staff WriterMandurah Coastal Times

ONE of Western Australia’s most prestigious wineries has released a chardonnay which has been described as Australia’s greatest white wine.

Wine connoisseurs, collectors and aficionados are scrambling to get their hands on a bottle of Leeuwin Estate’s 2016 Art Series Chardonnay.

The Margaret River producer, which is known for its chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, selects its most “opulent and age worthy” wines from each vintage for its “Art Series” range.

A bottle of the new release will set you back $104, or $1248 for a case of 12.

While Leeuwin acknowledges the wine as having “incredible poise and presence, with a long life ahead,” wine writer Ray Jordan had a bold statement on the new release.

“Leeuwin Estate is about to release what I believe is Australia’s greatest white wine, and the first I have given a score of 99-plus,” he wrote in the West Australian.

“It’s a game changer. And it’s given me a problem. You see, I gave the 2015 chardonnay 99 points, my highest score for an Australian white wine on release.

“But the problem now is that the 2016 is a better wine. I don’t believe any wine has achieved perfection, but this one pushes it mighty close. So all I can do is give it 99-plus.”
