Canada have put a dent in the Matilda’s Olympic medal hopes, taking a 2-0 win over Australia in their group-stage opener.
West Aussies Sam Kerr and Lisa De Vanna struggled to impose themselves on the match.
Kerr, from East Fremantle, was substituted at half-time, while Spearwood’s De Vanna started on the bench before being brought on for Chloe Logarzo just after the hour mark.
The Matildas conceded the fastest ever goal in women’s Olympic soccer history after a tap-in from Janine Beckie put Canada ahead inside the first minute, and Christine Sinclair doubled the lead in the 83rd minute.
It could have been worse for Australia, with Sinclair missing a penalty.
Australia next take on Germany, who scored a 6-1 rout of Zimbabwe, on Sunday morning at 5am.
