THE South Side Symphony Orchestra will look to warm up the public during a concert at the South Perth Civic Centre.

The Winter Melodies concert will feature West Australian Symphony Orchestra soloist Rob Gladstones, who will perform a French horn concerto by composer Reinhold Glire.

Orchestra president Irene Wright said the concerto had a “virtuosic” and “lyrical feel” to it.

“Rob came and rehearsed with us the other week and it was really amazing, it’s quite a recent piece (1950s) compared with the other pieces,” she said.

“It’s the second concert that he has performed with us and we are excited to have him back.

“He performed with us in 2011 when we first started and he saw us in our embryonic stage but we have had big changes since then.”

Wright said the concert would start with a performance of Night on Bald Mountain, which was energetic and very fiery.

“After Rob’s concerto, there will be a performance of Symphony Number 2 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius,” she said.

“It’s going to be a dynamic concert and not one where people will fall asleep.

“It’s a huge program but it’s all coming together in our rehearsal.

“There’s nothing nicer than being indoors listening to sublime music while it’s cold outside.”
