THE City of Belmont officially marked the start of construction at Faulkner Civic Precinct Community Centre with a sod-turning ceremony yesterday.

The $39 million project is set to include a library and digital hub, museum, cafe, creche and senior citizens centre that will replace the current facilities at Faulkner Park.

Mayor Phil Marks said the ceremony was another milestone for the City towards its much awaited multi-purpose, cross-generational community centre.

“The community centre represents a major investment on the part of the City to facilitate the delivery of community services,” he said.

“To date the City has secured a $9.6 million Federal Government grant and $3.8 million Lotterywest grant, for which it is very grateful.”

It is anticipated construction of the centre will take about two years, with fit out and occupancy expected by 2021.
