Belmont MLA scoffs at Labor plan to increase Belmont Police Station hours

Sophie MooreSouthern Gazette

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan announced that if it won the March election, a Labor government would extend hours at the station until 7pm.

Mrs Godfrey has accused past and present Labor candidates of misleading the public by suggesting Belmont police officers only worked 8am to 4pm because it was not a 24/7 police station.

“In reality, Belmont already has a 24-hour police service,” she said.

“For the last four years at every election – Federal, State or even local government – Labor candidates have called for the Belmont police station to be open 24/7 as if a front counter service would magically fix all crime issues in the electorate.”

Labor candidate for Belmont and Belmont Community Group presidentCassie Rowe said Belmont residents had continually voiced concerns over the lack of police resources in the community and wanted a more visible police presence.

“The Liberals have done nothing to address soaring crime rates in our local area. Their model has failed and the local community has lost confidence in their ability to tackle crime,” she said.

She said Labor would be increasing local police resourcing to Belmont.

“I will continue to fight for more resources to address the unprecedented crime spike that has occurred under the Barnett Liberal government,” she said.
